Product Design Studio
Product Design teaches students to design objects for everyday life — learning how form, function, ergonomics, and user needs combine to create useful, meaningful products.
Product Design
Grades 4-8
Product Design introduces students to the process of designing and building everyday objects, with an emphasis on balancing form and function. In this studio, students learn how products are shaped by use, material, and context—then apply that understanding as they design and construct their own functional objects.
Through hands-on making, students develop skills in three-dimensional thinking, measurement, and fabrication, while building confidence and independence using tools such as saws and drills. The studio emphasizes iteration, problem-solving, and craftsmanship as essential parts of the design process.
-
Understanding everyday products
Learn to observe and analyze man-made objects, exploring their purpose, context, and evolution over time.
3D visualization & technical drawing
Develop skills in sketching in three dimensions, measuring accurately, and drawing to scale.
From blueprint to build
Learn how to mark materials from plans, appreciate the iterative nature of engineering, and understand the value of precision—measuring twice and cutting once.
Problem-solving & trade-offs
Make thoughtful design decisions by weighing constraints and finding creative solutions as challenges arise during making.
Form, finish & craftsmanship
Refine the aesthetic quality of products through experimentation with wood finishing techniques.
Tool safety & workspace awareness
Learn the importance of safety, proper tool use, and responsible behavior in a workshop environment.
Resilience through making
Build patience, confidence, and perseverance by working through complex problems and learning from mistakes.
